What we do to help allergies?

These can be monoclonal antibody injections, anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDs or steroids. Most cases with a secondary bacterial infections will be given antibiotics to help control the infection. We may recommend skin cultures if there is suspicion of bacterial resistance especially for chronic skin issues. .

There are many causes that can trigger a pet’s immune system to flare up, but the most common ones we see are cause by environment (allergens, plants, molds, house cleaning chemicals), food, or the pet’s immune system overreacting to the trigger.
The goal is to control the inflammation that was triggered by the allergen. The inflammation – redness, heat, swelling can be managed by a wide range of medications. This may be an injectable (usually has long term effects), topical medication, or an oral medication. This will all depend on the medication best suited for your pet’s situation.
We will start with a thorough review of the all medical history. We will discuss what has been done and your pet’s response to each treatment. That way, we can eliminate what did not work and we will get some clues on what is working. We will definitely recommend some further testing and trials if our veterinarians deem it necessary to get more information on your pet’s status.
This involves trying out a diet that is made from a protein may not be allergic to. This takes about 6-8 weeks of strict diet and then slowly introducing back the regular diet. The goal of the trial is to find out which protein will trigger the immune system the least. Novel proteins commonly used are venison, duck, salmon, and kangaroo.
HP diets, as we call them, are specific on the protein source, but more on the protein size. Regardless of the protein, it is assumed that the smaller protein size (measured in KdA) will trigger the immune system less. The smaller the size, the less recognizable by the immune system.
